Product FAQs

Can Chem-Flowtronics modify standard products?

Yes.

Can Chem-Flowtronics accommodate unusual dimensions?

Yes.

Can Chem-Flowtronics provide custom materials or finishes?

Yes.

What is a sight flow indicator?

An instrument that allows operators to visually observe material moving through a piping system. It can provide valuable information about flow, product condition, and process operation without opening the system.

What are sight flow indicators used for?

Sight flow indicators can be used to observe:

  • Liquid or gas product flow
  • Flow/no-flow conditions
  • Product appearance
  • Color or clarity
  • Changes in process conditions
  • Potential blockages or interruptions
Are they suitable for Clean-In-Place (CIP) applications?

Yes, if they have sanitary tri-clamp connections.

What is a mixer?

Mechanical equipment used to blend, suspend, disperse, homogenize, or otherwise move materials within a vessel or process system.

How do I determine what mixer I need?

Mixer selection depends on several factors, including:

  • Fluid viscosity
  • Fluid density
  • Tank size and geometry
  • Batch volume
  • Mixing objective/s
  • Required turnover
  • Shear sensitivity
  • Temperature
  • Solids concentration
  • Desired mixing time
What impeller types are available?

Axial, marine, Hyflo, and other styles.

Can you design mixers for shear-sensitive products?

Yes.

Can you provide custom mixer designs?

Yes.

What is lined piping?

Lined piping combines a structural outer pipe with an internal lining selected to provide corrosion-purity resistance to the process environment. The appropriate lining depends on the fluid, temperature, pressure, and chemical compatibility requirements.

What is a relief valve?

A relief valve is a pressure protection device designed to automatically release pressure/fluid from a process system when pressure becomes higher than the set threshold.

How does a relief valve work?

Under normal operating conditions, the relief valve remains closed. If the system pressure reaches the predetermined set pressure the valve opens. Once pressure falls sufficiently the valve closes again.

Relief valve use case applications?
  • Blocked or closed outlet
  • Pump or compressor malfunction
  • Thermal expansion
  • Excessive heating
  • Chemical reaction
  • Steam generation
  • Control-valve failure
  • Utility failure
  • Fire exposure
  • Incorrect operating conditions
Relief valve vs safety valve?

Relief valves are commonly used with liquid service and pressure relief while a safety valve is commonly used for compressible fluids such as steam or gas and uses a rapid opening action.

Relief valve vs traditional rupture discs?

A rupture disc breaks when pressure reaches the burst point and must be replaced every time where a relief valve re-seats (closes) after each relieving.

Can relief valves be tested before shipment?

Yes, testing is performed to verify the required set pressure.

Can Chem-Flowtronics provide documentation with tested relief valves?

Testing and documentation requirements can be discussed when the order is placed. Certification packages may be available depending on the product and customer requirements.

What is a vacuum breaker and what does it do?

A vacuum breaker is a valve designed to prevent excessive negative pressure (vacuum) from developing inside a tank, vessel, piping system, or other process equipment. Under normal operating conditions the vacuum breaker remains closed, however, if the pressure inside the equipment drops below the predetermined vacuum set pressure, the valve opens and allows air or another designated gas into the system.

What is a check valve?

A check valve is an automatically operating valve the allows fluid to flow in one direction (back flow prevention) while preventing or limiting flow in the opposite direction.

How does a check valve prevent reverse flow?

The check valve automatically closes when flow direction reverses and uses the pressure and movement of the process media to open and close without the need of an operator or actuator.

What is the difference between a check valve and a shutoff valve?

A check valve prevents reverse flow, is automatic without an operator or actuator, and flow direction is one way. A shutoff valve either stops or allows flow in either direction and needs an operator or actuator to open and close. A check valve can’t be used for routine isolation where a safety valve can.

Are Chem-Flowtronics brand check valves swing check or spring check?

Spring loaded check valves.

What is the difference between a vacuum breaker, check valve, and relief valve?

Vacuum Breaker:

  • Protects against excessive vacuum
  • Responds when pressure becomes too low
  • Allows air/gas into the system

Check Valve:

  • Prevents reverse flow
  • Responds when flow attempts to reverse
  • Closes to stop backflow

Relief Valve:

  • Protects against excessive pressure
  • Responds when pressure becomes too high
  • Releases pressure/fluid out of the system
What is a PTFE envelope gasket?

A PTFE envelope gasket consists of a PTFE outer envelope surrounding a compressible filler material. The PTFE provides chemical resistance while the filler provides the compressibility needed for sealing.

Can Chem-Flowtronics provide materials other than stainless steel and carbon steel?

Yes.

Can Chem-Flowtronics provide custom products?

Yes. Customization and engineered solutions are an important part of our capabilities. If an off-the-shelf component does not meet your requirements, contact us with your specifications.
